Understanding Your MCS Certificate

Your MCS Certificate is your proof of quality, your ticket to export payments, and a key part of your solar paperwork. Keep it safe and ready to use when registering for tariffs or making claims.

What is an MCS Certificate?

Your MCS Certificate is proof that your solar installation meets the official UK quality standards set by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). It confirms:

  • Your installer is accredited to install solar safely and correctly.

  • Your system components (panels, inverter, battery) are certified for UK use.

  • You are eligible to apply for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), which lets you sell excess electricity back to the grid.

Think of it like your installation’s “birth certificate.”

Why is it Important?

  1. Guarantees Quality: It shows your system was installed to industry standards.

  2. Unlocks Export Payments: You need it to apply for SEG tariffs with your energy provider.

  3. Supports Warranty Claims: Manufacturers may ask for it if you need to claim on a product warranty.

  4. Adds Value to Your Property: If you sell your home, it’s proof the system was properly installed.

What Information Does It Include?

Your MCS Certificate will list:

  • The installer’s details and accreditation number.

  • Your system size and type (solar panels, inverter, battery).

  • The date of installation.

  • Confirmation that your system meets MCS standards.

Where Do You Find It?

  • You’ll get a digital copy in your handover pack.

  • It may also be emailed directly from the MCS database.

  • Keep it safe — you’ll need it if switching energy suppliers for export.

What Do You Do With It?

  • Keep it safe (both digital and printed copies).

  • Use it to register your export tariff with your chosen energy supplier.

  • Provide it if asked when making insurance or warranty claims.

FAQs

❓ Can I get a replacement if I lose it?
Yes. Your installer can request a reissue, or you can contact the MCS Helpdesk.

❓ Does it ever expire?
No. Once issued, it remains valid for the life of your system.

❓ Is it the same as DNO approval?
No. Your MCS Certificate proves installation quality. DNO approval relates to how much you can export to the grid. Both are needed.
