# Warranties & Paperwork: What to Keep Safe
## Keep hold of your MCS certificate, DNO approval, warranties, and handover pack. Together, they protect your solar system, unlock payments, and prove compliance for years to come.
### Why This Matters
Your solar installation comes with a mix of **warranties, certificates, and approvals**. Keeping them safe is essential — they prove quality, unlock export payments, and protect your investment if something goes wrong.
---
### Key Documents You’ll Receive
1. **MCS Certificate**
- Proof your system meets UK installation standards.
- Required for Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariffs.
2. **DNO Approval**
- Permission from your local Distribution Network Operator to connect to the grid.
- Confirms your export limit.
3. **Product Warranties**
- **Solar Panels** – Usually 20–25 years (product & performance).
- **Inverter** – Typically 5–12 years, extendable.
- **Battery** – Often 10 years or a cycle count limit.
4. **Workmanship Warranty**
- Covers the quality of installation (normally 2–10 years).
- Apex Doma provides an **insurance-backed guarantee**, so you’re protected even if the installer is no longer trading.
5. **Insurance-Backed Warranty Certificate**
- Independent cover for workmanship.
- Essential for long-term peace of mind.
6. **O&M Manual / Handover Pack**
- Your “system guidebook.”
- Includes key system details, diagrams, and contact info.
---
### Where to Store Them
- **Digital Copies** → Save in a dedicated folder (cloud storage recommended).
- **Paper Copies** → Keep in a safe place, like a home file with property documents.
- **Backups** → Share a copy with family or a solicitor if linked to property sale.
---
### Why Keep Them Safe?
- **Export Payments** – Energy suppliers will ask for MCS and DNO paperwork.
- **Warranty Claims** – Manufacturers often request the original certificate.
- **Property Sale** – Adds value and proves compliance for buyers.
- **Peace of Mind** – Quick access if issues arise years down the line.

### FAQs
**❓ Can I get replacements if I lose them?**
Yes. MCS and insurance-backed certificates can usually be reissued. Product warranties may be downloadable from the manufacturer.
**❓ Do I need to show these documents regularly?**
Not day-to-day, but keep them safe for future claims, tariff switches, or property sale.
**❓ How long should I keep them?**
For as long as your system is installed — ideally the lifetime of your panels (25+ years).
